Hacked Again by Scott N. Schober

Hacked Again

By: Scott N. Schober

I found Scott Schober and the details of his book “Hacked Again” by way of Twitter. And it caught my eye, especially when I noticed, directly under the title it read: “It can happen to anyone even a cybersecurity expert.” Okay, now I was totally looking over the details of this book cover to cover, and even made an attempt to contact Scott, and gave him the details of my blog.

He responded, and said he would love to have me read and review his book. And then he asked for my address. I was like what? My home address? Now I was even more excited, because not very often does someone want to send out a real life paperback anymore, least wise without making you enter contests, do this, that, and you know—work for it. Needless to say, I gave him my address and anxiously awaited the arrival of my book of knowledge.

Once the book came, the first thing I noticed about it, was Scott made a glossary. Now that was intriguing. For those of us who aren’t experts, and wonder what a ‘pen test’ is, he explains. I am one who had no idea what one is. And in case you don’t know, I will explain since I did bring it up to those of you following along.

Definition of a pen test: A colloquial term for penetration test or penetration testing. If you still don’t know, don’t be alarmed. There is no quiz in this review, or in the book, I promise. LOL

Anyway, I read this book cover to cover, twice honestly. I wanted to be certain I caught a few things, in case I missed something.

You see, Scott Schober is a CEO of one of the top wireless security firms. No, that isn’t where or how he started, but through the thick of it, it is how he learned and grew, and even learned. Those who create mayhem, hack, create bugs and viruses, and even cyber attack, and cyber bully people and companies, are internet criminals. Some get caught, and some don’t. These people live on the dark web, and victimize anyone and everyone without a care in the world.

Scott Schober has even been victimized, not once, but several times. You may think that just because someone is a security expert that they know the ins and outs, and that this kind of things doesn’t happen to them, but guess what?! It does. You go to bed one night with thousands and wake up the next in the hole. Where did it all go? What happened? Where did he go wrong?

Through watching and learning, Scott sets up accounts, watches, learns, and educates himself. He changes banking institutions, and even checks into their own employees, and data entry, and more. But still, the only place he feels his money is safe, is in his own hands, or even in his mattress. Scott is learning banks are not the safest place for his money.

Scott researches, he learns even more of hacks and breaches. There are several banks, (I am not going to mention them in this, for their protection, and mine.) who have issues. These banks seem to know they have issues, but yet do nothing, because they are big enough to what? (My question here? Big enough to what? Not care? It’s a write off? What?)

Banks hire employees, run credit checks, and do everything they can to make sure your money is safe. Your money is also FDIC protected, which means it is insured.

When hackers gain access to your money, and the bank has to replace it, obviously it must be quick and easy, because I personally have had it happen several times, and without question it was replaced in two days with one bank, and twenty four hours with another. The one banks fraud department was already aware of the case, that one was the case that was going on already, the twenty four hour one, saying others had already filed. The other, the two day one, I provided my info, and they claimed they had to investigate. The longest I have ever had to wait myself, for a fraud claim was a week. I have never had a fraud claim denied, ever. This to me, is sad and pathetic.

The fraud departments, which were added, because of hackers, and the dark web, were created because of these Criminals, and sure- it’s making more jobs for the unemployed. (For now, until that goes robotic.) But these things are all being added, and more things keep being added to banks because of hackers, and the internet, and crime, and criminals. So honestly- will our money ever be safe again?

Long ago I watched a movie, or maybe a TV show. I can’t remember what or which it was. But there internet, and electronic devices, and the web, everything went out, like it was back to the dark ages. Those that didn’t have their money out of the machines, were screwed. Meaning, if you had no cash in hand, you had no money- period. And a lot of people believe that. When they were promising us that the year 2000, or 2001- you know the millennium was going to cause the world to end, or some kind of problems for us, some expected the computers to stop working then. Because of issues like this, yes. There are many people who do have cash in hand, and are prepared. This is a wise suggestion, as you will see, when you read Scott’s book. It is better to be a little prepared, then not at all.

This book "Hacked Again" looks at ways to protect your monies, ways things can happen, and even explained how it did happen to Scott Schober, a professional cybersecurity expert. This book will enlighten you, make you wonder, and then make you rethink your possibilities. You will be glad that you read it, and you will want to share it with others, so they can learn, and be informed as well. It is a five star read, very educational, and informative. The book in itself, "Hacked Again" will teach you things, even if it is only one thing, I promise you it will be one thing you did not know. I am glad I read it, and this book will never be dusty, because I will always go through it, and check things out in it every so often, and share it and its info with others. You truly need to get your copy of “Hacked Again” if you haven’t already, you won’t regret it, in this day and age, trust me.

Here is Scott with his awards that he has earned
Before I ask my questions to Scott, I wanted to warn you the readers, that my questions will seem a little more in depth than usual, because I too, have been hacked. So my questions may seem a little more personal, but I wanted to really let you see, and know what it is like, to be “Hacked Again”.

On that note, here are my questions for Scott:

1. My husband and I have also dealt with BOA. Originally, we are from Akron, Ohio. They were first known as Charter One there. And while they were Charter One, we were even having problems with them. Once they became BOA, the problems became even more intense. My question to you is this: Is it just that banking systems are easy to hack, or is it that BOA is/was an easy target?

Many banks have been targeted and hacked for the past few years.  Most notably was JP Morgan/Chase that I discuss in the book. In 2015 Bank of America was under multiple attacks by hackers.  The hackers created a mirror image of the BOA’s web site and from a phishing attack re-directed customers to a ‘fake’ BOA site that looked 100% legit. They would they would be re-directed the fake site would ask to verify their account information.  After they entered their account info they would be re-directed again to a site that asked for their personal information (i.e. Address, password, DoB, and answers to three security challenge questions). All of this looked as though the bank was asking this but it was really the hackers.

Lately there have been numerous hacks to smaller regional banks as hackers have realized that larger banks are spending significant dollars to stop hackers and the smaller banks can’t afford to spend as much on advanced threat detection systems that can thwart attacks.

2. My second question still goes along with question one, do you think that BOA is just insecure, or do you think that all banks are just easy targets?

I think BOA as well as many banks like JPMC, CititBank…. have all had to heavily invest in cyber security monitoring tools, realtime threat detection tools and internal training top down so everyone within the organization is on high alert.   I recently talked to the president of a smaller regional bank and asked him his personal opinion as how safe are banks today and his response was: " No bank is 100% secure” which I can believe.

3. As with you, we switched from BOA because we lost a lot of funds. And it didn't stop happening no matter what we did. And this was our personal checking account. This was before online banking. How was it 'then' so easy to do these kinds of things to people?

There are numerous ways that hackers can get your funds.  Credit card can be compromised (most common is where hackers install skimmers at gas pumps, or scan your card when it is out of your site).  Debit Cards there are many bluetooth skimmers that are inserted into physical ATM machines that can compromise your mag stripe data and pin hole micro cameras to see your PIN as it is typed.  Many thieves will hack into banks, monitor tellers transactions, and they transfer money out of one account to another using the tellers credentials.

Scott speaking in public
4. What is the best advise that you can give to anyone, in business and in life, to keep their bank accounts secure?

If you can keep your personal finance simple it is easier to monitor and protect.  If you have (1) credit card you can easily monitor activity and you can also call and tell your credit card company to monitor and set limits (i.e. if any transactions are ever done over $500 please do not put through and call me first).  Having 2+ credit cards is very challenging to monitor and catch fraudulent charges.  It is essential to report anything suspicious immediately to your bank so no further funds can be stolen.

Do not use debit cards.  The cyber thieves are taking money out of your account directly and it takes longer to get the funds back.  You must report any compromises immediately as well.

5. My Aunt and my Father insist that the computers and the internet are tools of the Devil, and will destroy us. Do you agree with this terminology?

My opinion is there is good and bad with all technology and it is really how you use technology in a positive balanced way.  There will always be unsavory individuals who will sell illicit items in the dark web (i.e. drugs, firearms, child pornography…) as well as on the internet in general.

6. If you could explain the internet to someone who had never heard of it, you know someone who just climbed out the dark ages, how would you explain it to them?

The Internet is a system of interconnected computers around the globe allow billions of devices to interconnect.  The internet allows individuals, businesses, education, and government to freely communicate.  The internet is where you can go to get directions, information, photos, videos, music, news and everything and anything you can imagine.

7. Since you have written this book, have you learned anything new?

I continue to learn everyday, especially through the feedback from my readers.  I was amazed how many people upon reading Hacked Again have reached out to me to share their own nightmares of being hacked.  Many readers reached out to asking for further advice which I am always happy to share.

8. Have you ever had any issues with cyber bullying or cyber attacks?

I have had several notorious hackers that have ‘cyber bullied’ me on twitter and LinkedIn.  For the most part I try to ignore them.  They have tried to belittle me and are frustrated that I share tips to help people keep safe so it is somewhat flattering.  When they escalate the cyber bullying to threats and improper language I simply block them and report them.

9. Do you think social media is too revealing and people are too forth coming with their lives and secrets?

Absolutely, as you can socially engine most internet users password, security challenge questions with the basic information they post on various social media sites.  I always encourage people to limit the amount of information that you put out there.  If you feel the desire to put your birthday on LinkedIn, why not lie.  Why tell everyone what high school you attended? Why not make make the cyber thieves have a challenge with incorrect information posted on social media when they are trying to hack your account.

10. What do you think is the safest bank, or is there one?

My mattress, cash is king.  I limit the use of one credit card that I use.  I also write on the back where the signature ‘CHECK ID BEFORE RUNNING’ so most of the time I will be asked for ID.  This is useful if I ever have my card stolen and a merchant will ask for ID and the cyber thief will not succeed.

11. What is the actual safest way to handle our money?

I recommend keeping a small stash of cash hidden at home that you use to pay daily incidental expenses (i.e. gas, food…)   This is helpful to minimize what you spend when you have to reach into your wallet for each purpose.  I suggest the use of one credit card so you can monitor closely all transactions.  I am a believer if you can’t afford it - don’t buy it.

The White Wolf Prophecy ~Mating Book 1~ By: L.K. Kelley

The White Wolf Prophecy

Mating Book 1
(The White Wolf Prophecy Trilogy)
By: L.K. Kelley

This book is full of twists, turns and surprises that will keep you on the edge of your seat wondering what could or even should happen next. The details are thorough, and exceptionally written, and easy to follow along, so much so that you can visualize where you are at, if you have a great imagination. The words are there to guide you to the place you will want to see, and follow along, throughout the pages, along with these mythical creatures as they mate, and battle, and even lose their lives.

Kaitlan O’Hara was an Editor for Seneca House Publishing, which was owned by her father, Canaan. Zanack, who killed Kaitlan’s own mother long ago, is someone no one is truly sure exactly who he is other than someone who murders females. So he must be sought out and found. Canaan knows this, yet he still sends his own daughter into the path of danger, before her twenty seventh birthday, right before she enters into the world of her own supernatural being, to edit a book of their best-selling author Cordone Valone. And Cordone Valone lives deep in the Rocky Mountains, in Colorado, in the heart of ‘nowhereland’ according to Kaitlan. Kaitlan resented her father for sending her on this mission, she despised Valone, and now he was ruining her birthday.

Canaan ends up murdered, and this results in Kaitlan not having her own family to inform her of her own changing body. Cordone is left holding the ball, and guides her through, telling her what she needs to know, and in the long run, feelings seem to grow.

The White Wolf prophecy is known by all, except for Kaitlan, until now. They are known as the clan of O’Hara, something no one ever told Kaitlan. Now Kaitlan is learning and taking in everything. She learns of the prophecy, and the scrolls, which have been missing for thousands of years.

Kaitlan needs and wants to know more, it is her destiny. She feels with Cordone by her side, maybe there is chance.

To learn what is in store for the Clan of O’Hara you need to buy a copy of this great book, and learn for yourself, and follow along! It is a wonderful tale that will keep you wanting more, and you will fall in love with it, and its writer! It is a definite five star read, worth your time! I was very pleased with this, and look forward to reading more books by Ms. Kelley in the future!

My questions for Ms. Kelley:

1. What made you write this book and how long did it take you?

I have always been a voracious reader, so when the opportunity came along to become a book editor, I took it. After about a year, I realized that maybe I could also write as well. Strangely enough, I've been writing and editing all of my daughter's own writings all her life, and others prior to that as well. And, with my minor in English, it just seemed natural for me. Like every one else, I would say, "I'm going to write a book one day!" I never intended to do it, of course, but truth? Who does? So, I decided to give it a try. Since I love fiction of any kind, I especially love the supernatural, romance, & paranormal genre, it was only natural that I would pick that genre for my own book. Reading books such as Twilight, Karen Moning's “Fever” series, Quinn Loftis' “The Grey Wolves Series”, the Hunger Games, etc., it occurred to me that, except for Moning, I could find very little for adults within the genre. Most were YA. That just wasn't good enough for me, because they were great for teens, but doggone it, I wanted to have the same adventures as well - with a more adult theme! Trying to figure out if any other adult woman had noticed the same things, first, I asked my daughter what she thought.  She told me, “It's about time! You can't find many books with an adult theme!” Next, I asked a good friend of mine, who agreed with my daughter. That made two women in their early 30's and late 50's who agreed. That made me even more curious, and I asked how many women out there were “secret” readers of the supernatural, and how old they were. What I discovered was fascinating! Asking women between 18-65, I found that adult women in every age range wanted to have the same adventures that I did, but like me, they wanted a more adult theme. Because of this, I chose an age of 27 for my character, Kaitlyn Seneca O'Hara. After a dream, in July, 2013, I had a dream which resulted in a fully formed story when I awoke the next morning. I immediately began to write after breakfast, and continued to write from morning till night, realizing I had enough for a trilogy! So, I wrote the White Wolf Prophecy ~ Mating ~ book 1 in July, 2013, finishing by the first of August  in 2013.  I finished the entire trilogy by the end of October, 2013. I chose DRAGONEYE Publishing House, and my first book was released on February 14, 2014 with the last book published on February 14, 2015.  (The first date was an accident, but the second one was deliberate). I also attended my very first book-signing. That meant traveling to Glendale, Colorado at the Barnes and Noble all the way from Arkansas. It was very exciting, and many came out to buy them!
2. Do you have any photos of the characters, or even a description of them?

I do. I was so very excited when I had professional photographers offering their service to take professional photos for my book cover & website! And, I was even more excited when my heroine, hero, and villain volunteered! I had so much fun and support, and I can never thank them enough! I even have many behind the scenes pics on my website, http://firebird4554.wix.com/white-wolf-prophecy for fun. People always love to see these, and think it's glamorous, but I can say that it is totally different than I ever realized!A lot of it is hurry up and wait for hours with makeup, hair, and wardrobe.  First, the young lady who was going to be Kaitlyn, had to fly from Denver, Colorado, to Fort Smith, AR. Then, we drove during a blinding rainstorm 2 ½ hours to Little Rock, Arkansas to meet with the young man who was to become my character of Cordone Tristan Valon, and love interest of Kaitlyn. Our outdoor scenes had to be nixed, so we made the best of what we did have. And, they turned out great! I also wanted something a bit different, so my characters did not take off their clothes, or posed in almost nothing. I wanted a true romance book on the outside, with a little bit of WOW inside of it! The full descriptions and full backgrounds of each character are fully covered in the books.  It was great fun to makeup the varied backgrounds, and I tried to make them as realistic as possible.  There are some tears for one character, as well as laughter and fun with all 4 women in their varied ages. No two characters are alike, and their backgrounds are slowly revealed throughout the books with several surprises along the way!

3. Did you find yourself getting tongue tied with the names of the characters in the book? And did you do this on purpose? (Maybe it was just me...)

Well, there were a couple of minor villains, and it was fun!  But, in general, no.  I tried to stay away from it.  However, with one character having several different names that evolve throughout all three books, it was hard to keep them straight! One character called him one name, and everyone else calling him a different one was most confusing. And, then, just to spice it up, I added one more name that he goes by, but you won't find out who he is until book 2. It's a true surprise, and I gave mythology a true tweak on this one!

4. What made you come up with this curse and prophecy?

Great question! The plot was in my dream, but I had to actually come up with the poems to describe the prophecy-curse that appear in each book.  And, it sounds like a cop out, but I devised the poems when relaxing in the shower!  After a few alterations, I had it done much faster than I ever thought I could.  I wanted to keep the reader on their toes and wondering who the villain was until the very last second!

5. Did you have to do any special research for this book?

Yes, but actually, I drew from what I had learned and researched over the years. I was a member of the best alternative science magazine in the world, called Atlantis Rising Magazine, which is published by a wonderful man, Doug Kenyon out of Montana. I also have been a member of their forums since 2001, and many real researchers were on it as well. When I joined in the great and varied theories, I felt honored that they would even speak to me, but they were all so nice, and very respectful to my own ideas.  Many things such as time travel, mythology, theories of Atlantis, legends, etc., as well as paradoxes, are available, and I put my own twists and spins on these in my books.

6. What do you suggest for anyone wanting to become a writer?

That is truly a tough question. Most all writers approach writing in so many different ways.  My biggest suggestion is make sure your book is edited properly. If your book is edited correctly, it makes a large difference, and trust me...readers DO notice bad spelling, language use, and punctuation's.  I do 3 edits for my authors, & my own writings.  And, even that is not a total guarantee you won't miss something, but by the third edit, it's less problematic.  It's not enough for someone to just read it, and find a few things here and there. You need a real editor. I believe that can be the difference between a mediocre book and a best-seller. Another suggestion. Every author has their own way of writing.  Some keep outlines. Some write from notes. Others, like me, write in story boarding like they do in TV & movies.  I write in my mind, then act each scene out, before I write it down. It helps me keep continuity within the stories. But it's truly subjective for each writer. Find the best way if you are a new writer, and stick with it.  I find this way is best for me, and why my books read so much like a movie for theater or TV. It's easy to visualize for me, and my descriptions are very vivid.
7. So the idea's behind the scroll's, the prophecy, and the curse, this all sounds so...so mythological and even historical. Was that what you were going for?

Yes, and no. It's more myth and legends than historical. However, I did intend it to read as if it was historical. It was a world that I designed using myth, legend, and time travel thrown in the mix.  You have great creative license with myth and legend, and you can get creative with any story.

8. What are you working on now?

My new series is called the "Anaerris Code – Gem”.  Again, it has myth, legends, Angels, demons, and I have thrown a lot of creative license in it, which includes another interesting idea that has its basis in reality – terraforming.  I have just finished with the first edit, and I have had volunteers offer to read it for me for reviews.

9. What all education have you had?

I graduated with an Associate of Arts degree, 4.0 (this is straight A's in America) with a major in music, specifically voice, & a minor in English. I am also a professional Interior Decorator, cake decorator, and Office Organizer.  And, like my books, I use my imagination to make it all work.

10. As descriptive as this book seemed to me, do you also maybe have scenic photos, or descriptions of the places this story took place? My imagination imagined quite a beautiful place, so I'm quite curious.

Absolutely!  FAQ – they are real places! In fact, we actually trekked to several different places in Colorado to get them. It has many different vistas, so it was perfect! I had these places in my mind, before I even finished editing the books. In December of 2013, when we had the professional photos taken of my characters, we began our treks.  While part of the story takes place in St Louis, Missouri, the majority of the plot is in Colorado. On all 3 covers, the backgrounds are photos that I, personally, took. I had certain scenes in my mind, and the three that I decided upon were perfect!   The first book's background is Echo Lake in Colorado, near Mount Evans. Book 2 is Bear Lake in Rocky National Park, Colorado.  It not only was the perfect place, but the sky cooperated with us as well! It began as a gorgeous day, but the weather turned on us in an instant! There was still ice and snow on the ground along with Bear Lake that was frozen, and covered over with snow! We took care not to get on the ice – if we could see it, which we couldn't! We had to estimate where it might begin. By the time we were finished with our photoshoot, it was snowing, and that is exactly what I wanted, because it fits with another mystery in book 2. Next, I had a specific place I wanted to use for my last book, and after my second booksigning at Barnes and Noble in Glendale, Colorado, we drove to Glenwood Springs, stayed overnight, then proceeded to Hanging Lake for the long hike, which began at 6 AM. I describe it in the book without telling where it was, because I wanted someone to imagine the place, but not having seen it in real life. I wanted it romantic, and beautiful. Hanging Lake is a magical, incredible, and an amazing place to see! It's called that because it is, quite literally, a “hanging” lake in the middle of nowhere on the side of a mountain! It is so pristine, the general consensus is that it shouldn't even be there! It is protected, and so clear, you can see the finest detail under the water. Yet, it is fed by a huge waterfall above it, which you must hike even futher up to see. It is called Spouting Rock. This is a 1 1/2 mile trek straight up, and is the most beautiful place ever!  It's like a place out of J R R Tolkien's Lord of the Rings.  You expect to see elves and dwarves pop out to meet you!  It is truly magical place – almost a mythological place that is real! And, I have these pictures on my website as well. I hope you enjoy looking at them!

12. Anything to add:

Yes. The books are a progression until the end of the story. I love to keep people guessing who the real villain is, and the ending is not like any other you will ever read, Deneale. I can guarantee this for sure. It has surprised everyone who has read all three books.

I also want to pay special thanks to the following for all their support and help! After I told my husband, Wes, and daughter, Laura, what I had done, they were so excited, they enlisted full support for me. I had “test market” readers for all 3 books, and these interviews are in all the them. Each one was absolutely thrilled, and yet, had no idea that I could write! A friend who was in the Educational field as teacher and assistant to the principal, asked me why I had not done this before, because she had no idea that I could “write like that”! She and my author friend, Anita Meye, encouraged me to continue to write.

I want to acknowledge my wonderful photographers:

Fun FAQs about the book:

  • I did base my characters after real people with changes, of course
  • My good friend, Anita Meyer, allowed me to use her own first name in the book with her permission, who is also a great writer in her own right!  http://anitameyer1.wix.com/anita-meyer-books
  • A mythological and surprise character appears in book 2
  • I designed all my own book covers. These were so much fun!
  • The woman on the covers of all three books are, believe it or not, my daughter, and the men on them are her friends
  • Neither my daughter or husband knew I was writing a book. It's fun to be able to surprise your family when you are considered predictable, and they realize you aren't! I was writing my last book before Wes asked me what I was doing. I told him I was “writing a book”, and he said, “I figured”, then continued to read the newspaper!
  • I have many fans at work as well as followers
  • I loved writing for the women between 18-65
  • I was surprised to discover that MEN like my books, too! I never expected that one!

I want to thank you, Deneale, for this opportunity to tell you a bit about my book. I've had a blast doing the interview! Again, thank you so much!

Mating (White Wolf Prophecy #1)Mating by L.K. Kelley
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
