When Debra asked me to review this book, I of course, couldn’t refuse her, because I happen to know she is an amazing writer. And once I find someone whose writing has my attention, I am a fan for life. So as always, I was honored to do her the honor of this.

And once she sent it to me, I fell in love with the cover instantly. It is a beautiful cover, looking at just makes you feel like pulling up a chair next to the fire place, and sitting down with a good book, like this one!

In the book, “Check Out” we meet a marine vet by the name of Nash Ware, who is also quite a bit handsome. But Nash wears an eye patch, and his ex-fiancé was intimidated by it, and walked out of a perfectly good relationship because of it. Because of this, Nash feels that women are no longer part of his calling.

However, one day Nash decides to go into the library where a shy Betsy Bobbin works, and she can’t help but notice Nash. And not just because of his eye patch, she also noticed his masculine body, and even his attitude. She is immediately drawn to him.

You know how luck or fate help to guide you onto the right path, and put two people together? Well what happens next seems like fate, a chance meeting, and it just makes everything fall right into place perfectly. 

Betsy ends up with a flat tire, but not only is it flat, but it is during a storm. And guess who comes to the rescue? Every woman loves to be rescued, especially by a hunk like Nash.

Betsy gets to learn about Nash, and that he has PTSD, and that he isn’t sure if he wants to let anyone in his life. Betsy feels torn, but she also feels that she just might have found the love of her life.

Nash does have feelings for Betsy too, but he has his own wounds, and problems to deal with. He isn’t sure what to do. 

The book “Check Out” is a deep love story portraying that our Military Vets do get wounded in so many ways, both physically and mentally. And from those wounds come even deeper problems. Not only does Debra tell you an enlightening and touching story here, she also gives you the perspective into the military veterans, and how one is coping. It is a truly eye opening five star read. I found it very enjoyable and think everyone should read it! I could not put it down; I just had to know what was going to happen every step of the way! Debra truly made this work!

My questions for Debra: 

1. What made you write this book and how long did it take you?
~

I originally wrote “Check Out” after my publisher Secret Cravings invited me to be part of a military box set where the proceeds would go to Operation Troop Aide. Then just as the edits were finished, they announced they would be closing their doors. That was a sad day and it was a thrill for me to finally see the book in print when I re-released it through Belo Dia Publishing. I wanted to write a story about a veteran who has PTSD but I didn’t want the story to be so much about that issue that the story became about the PTSD. I see a lot of that in military romance when it is used as a plot device. For me the story people become real and just like meeting a new friend, Nash’s PTSD is just a part of who he is. If you met him you might not know the entire story of why he has it or exactly what he does to deal with it. But you’d see him functioning in the world just like anyone else that does or doesn’t have it, if that makes sense. I have a lot of friends who are veterans so I wanted to handle Mash’s story like I might handle theirs and I wanted to give him a happy ending. 
 ~

2. Why do you write?
~

I write because I love to write. I’d write even if no one read what I wrote. J I’ve written poetry for years even though people say you can’t make money writing poetry. As if that were the only reason to do to write something.
 ~

3. What are your hobbies?
 ~

I enjoy primitive camping and stepping back into medieval times with the Society for Creative Anachronism, shooting my Mongolian horse bow (primitive archery), shooting long guns and shooting pool. I also enjoy yoga, belly dancing, reading and travel. I also love to collect seashells from each beach I have visited. 
 ~

4. What are you working on now?
 ~

I’m finishing the expansion of A Change of Scenery, which was out as a short story with Secret Cravings. Readers wanted more, so I am expanding the story and it will be the first book in my Hunger Roads trilogy. Set in the future it is a world of big pharma running the govt, GMO’s and a secret group of former Special Forces veterans who are fighting to protect the constitution and to bring down the corrupt government. A sweet belly dancer that just happens to grow healing herbs in her spare bedroom finds herself on a government terrorist list (herbalists have been classified as terrorists) and a former SEAL rescues her and then they are on the run. It’s taken me longer to rewrite/expand because I decided to make it part of a trilogy which means threading everything that needs to be in before the next two books. There’s a lot of weaving new parts into the first version and that kind of writing is always slower than writing a brand new story.
 ~

5. Do you imagine yourself as one of the characters when you write your books?
 ~

It is more like I am their friend and they are sharing things with me most of the time. I do step inside sometimes and that can get emotional, much like empathy, when I feel what they are feeling. I read one of my Christmas stories for maybe the tenth time and it still made me cry the last time I read it. But I always give them a happy ending and I know it is coming so maybe that is a little bit silly, to get so emotional. You know that scene in the movie Romancing the Stone? Where she cries when she’s at the end of her book? Well that would be me.   
 ~

6. Do you ever get writers block?
 ~

I once had it for a very long time. Six long months after my golden retriever Trixie died, I could not write. I vowed after that never to have it again. So here is how I avoid it. I change where I write by moving around with my laptop. I change what I “need” to be able to write by writing longhand with a legal pad and I have even talked into my phone to record a scene. That way there is no “I can only write if…” in my mind because I think I need it. Because Trixie sat by my side when I wrote so when she was gone that loss froze my writing, as I got too emotional every time I sat down to write. So after six months of that, I wanted to find all the things that might freeze it again and work to avoid it ever happening again. I also work on more than one story so if things start to get slow on one I will switch to another. I will not spend time in front of a blank page for very long. No more than five minutes. And I have all kinds of exercises that I can do if I sit there and am getting close to the five minutes. When I was teaching classes locally and doing a lot of mentoring I passed those on to my students because I know they work. I also don’t stick “write every day” in my head so there isn’t the huge pressure if for a day or two I don’t get to write. That has served me well when I had to be in the hospital or when my father passed. It is okay to give yourself permission to take time off from your writing. I used to be so hard on myself but ironically now that I’m not, the writing is always flowing unless life gets in the way. 
~

7. Do you have any photos of the characters or maybe character descriptions for this book?

I don’t have any photos as I could just close my eyes and see them but I always have to describe my characters for Sheri, my wonderful cover artist. Nash Ware is six foot tall with dark hair that has grown out enough since he came back from active duty that it sometimes falls into his eyes. Or would if he had not lost an eye in the war. He wears a dark eye patch to hide his scars and it’s winter so he wears a fatigue jacket and military style boots when he comes stomping into Betsy’s library and her world. Betsy Bobbin has long blonde hair and always wears red lipstick. She’s a shy librarian who dresses modestly. Her younger sister Leann has dark hair and dresses more to catch a man’s eye. Unfortunately she caught the eye of the campus stalker, which turns dangerous for her. 
~

8. If you could meet ONE Author who would it be?
~

Oh it is so hard to pick just one. I get to chat with so many authors on my radio show on Tuesday nights and I wish I could meet them all in person too. Okay so just one. I would love to meet Alice Hoffman. She is one of my favorite authors. I was just thinking about her book Practical Magic the other day. It was made into a movie and I’ve put it on my list of movies to watch around Halloween. 
~

9. What is it that led you to writing in the first place?

~

When I was a small girl I would imagine stories but never wrote them down. In college I started writing short stories and eventually switched to novels. I still write short stories and you can find a few of those out in eBook. So I have been writing stories in my head ever since I was a child.

10. What all education have you had?
~

I went back to college when my sons were in high school and junior high and got a bachelors degree in English. I’d been working at a bank as a head teller and you couldn’t get a higher-level job in banking without a degree. So I went back to finish my BA and then still couldn’t find a job after I graduated because we lived in the Pocono mountains, where there just weren’t that many jobs. That’s when we moved to the Memphis TN area to be near family and I started working at a weekly newspaper. That was twenty years ago and now here I am writing books and using that degree. So people are no longer asking me “What can you do with an English degree?”

There’s a small Island of the Coast of Florida. known as Palmira Island, where the handsome and sexy Leo Villeneue has returned from Afghanistan as a War Veteran, hoping to avoid the pain of his past.

There while Leo is enjoying the beautiful beach where the sun shines making the sand look like diamonds and the ocean like heaven; Leo runs into the one woman he’s never forgotten: Jessica Clarke. 

Leo and Jessica manage to rekindle their love and it was as hot and as steamy as the warm Florida sun. The only problem being is that sexy tattooed hunk, has a secret he can’t afford to give up. 

It’s not just dealing with his PTSD, but Leo doesn’t want to ruin what he finally has gotten back. And Jessica is tickled with the fact that Leo is not bothered with the fact that she has put on a little weight, thus proving her does see her for physical attributes. Together they see one another without their faults, but are afraid of making mistakes.

As I read this book, I could see the ties into her last book, “Hot Shade” because the books are both about the Florida coast and how the beach and sex just coincide. 

However, “Into the Heat” seemed quite a bit more eccentric to me, because I felt like the couple were more lifelike. People today aren’t shaped perfectly, and do come with problems such as PTSD, and therefore this gave the book a little more umph and made it much more plausible. I truly adored this book, and give it five stars without question. I love looking at it with a Military outlook, and second chances. This book is a true heart throb meant to happen. I am glad I able to read and review it! I most definitely enjoyed it!

Here are my questions for Tamara:

1. What led to this book and how long did it take to write?

My best friend and I were walking near Treasure Island, a Gulf Coast beach, one November. It was right around Thanksgiving and we ran into a giant sand sculpting competition. These weren't just kiddie sandcastles -- they were elaborate sculptures. Artistic, even. As we walked around, I noticed a very handsome man sculpting—he was kneeling in the sand wearing nothing but shorts and his hands were all dirty. I looked at my friend and said, "This would make a good scene in a novel." I've known my friend since we were little, and we immediately started planning and plotting the book. We do that often -- wait until we break out the Aussie firefighter ideas.


2. Did you do any research for this book?

I did research various combat-related disorders for Leo, the main character. He suffers not only from PTSD, but from something called "Moral Injury," which is when someone suffers harm to their moral conscience. This condition isn't spoken about much, and it emphasizes the psychological, cultural, and spiritual aspects of trauma.


3. Where is your favorite writing spot?

I write in three places: at my kitchen table, or on my treadmill desk. Generally all of the serious writing takes place at the table. It's a peaceful nook that I love. When I read my work or self-edit, I generally use the treadmill desk. I don't like to sit a lot and get restless if I do, so walking slowly and writing/reading is perfect for me. When I really have to focus, I head to a local cafe. Somehow I am best able to focus when there's chaos around me -- that's probably the years of being in a newsroom as a journalist. This can get awkward, though, if I'm writing a sex scene. Once I looked up and saw a former colleague. I think I blushed.


4. Do you have plans for another book?

I have plans for many books! I have more ideas than I know what to do with. Right now I'm working on another story for Boroughs. It's a third book set on the island of Palmira (where Into the Heat and Hot Shade were set). The third story is about Catalina, who is the best friend of the heroine in Into the Heat. This will also be a second chance trope. I can only say a few things: the hero is Italian-Puerto Rican. And he's a sexy geek.


5. What do you like best about writing?

I love writing about the rush of lust at the point it turns to love. It's such a heady, powerful emotion, those first stirrings of attraction. Trying to capture that again and again on the page is so much fun.


6. What do you suggest to anyone wanting to start a writing career?

Read, and then read some more. Read all different genres and read the classics. If you don't have money for school, there are free literature courses through Coursera that are taught by top university teachers. One I would recommend is The Fiction of Relationship -- it's a free class through Coursera and it's a rigorous, 12-week class that features many classic novels.


7. What keeps you inspired to write?

I write in my day job as a reporter. Those stories are interesting and inspiring because I meet all kinds of people who persevere against horrible odds. I also love being a journalist because I'm nosy. Fiction is a little different -- I have to be nosy within my own psyche to create stories. Fiction is also an excellent mental break from daily life.


8. Do you have any photos or descriptions of Leo and Jessica? (see attached photos)

Leo is from New Orleans, of Creole-Cajun-French Canadian descent. His mother's family were freed Haitian slaves, and his father's family was from Quebec. He's a Marine and is a big, strapping guy. He's got short hair, bronze skin and light eyes

Jessica is like the majority of women -- she's larger than she wants to be but is trying mightily to accept her body. She's tall and curvy, with long, curly blonde hair.

The kind of hair that people see on mermaids and on surfer girls -- the kind that makes other women jealous. Although she struggles with her body, Leo loves her curves. 

My favorite part of the book is when Leo and Jessica are kissing:

Leo brushed his lips against hers then looked into her eyes, which had darkened to emerald. Now was the time for his confession. “I’ve only ever been with one woman. And she’s right in front of me, wearing a Hello Kitty T-shirt with her legs wrapped around me. You know what size she is? Size sexy.”

I won this book from Boroughs Publishing group, at their facebook party-by answering a question with a description to a sexy fireman photo. I answered with a short few sentences, and won. I was tickled, because I have learned that all the writers for Boroughs are pretty amazing!

The character Mickey saved the life of Amanda’s restaurant partners child. Now said restaurant owner wants to do something nice for him. But the problem is that Mickey has one simple rule: no contact after rescue. And she, the Mother of the boy that was rescued, has an organic restaurant and Mickey prefers the meat and potatoes kinds of meals. He also is uncomfortable accepting gratitude. Mickey is simple and shy, he’s someone who is just trying to get a little peace and quiet. And it was when Mickey finally caves to take the woman up on the meal, he meets the cook: Amanda and his whole life changes. You know how that goes, ‘Love at first sight!’ And poof your whole word changes!

The chemistry these two have is amazing. But with Mickey, he has demons. He is a Veteran from the Iraq war, and he still hasn’t gotten over it. However, in order for Mickey and Amanda to live happily ever after he must first be able to move on from his past. The thing is, can he? 

The part that is so upsetting is while Mickey was busy saving the little boy, he was late for a date, (which was not an unusual thing,) and ended up dumped. You see how it is?! Do a good deed for someone, and get knocked down….

This book: “Naturally Yours” just goes to prove to you, that when you think you’re at a stand still, and nothing else matters, you can finally find the answer to all of your prayers. Answers aren’t meant to be searched for, but just found when you aren’t looking. They are just “Naturally yours!”

I give this sweet, romantic book five beautiful stars. It was a wonderful book, and I truly loved every single minute of it. I would recommend this book over and over again. I found it so compelling, and here I was rooting for Mickey and Amanda, and wanting them to work out. When you read something, and find yourself involved in it, so much so that you are rooting for the characters, you know you have found a good book.

My Questions for Adele:

Thank you for inviting me to your blog for an interview, and for reading my veteran-turned-paramedic story NATURALLY YOURS. I’m so glad you enjoyed the book.

1.     What made you write this book? My husband is a Navy veteran who saved the life of a child on a roadside in the 1990’s on his way home from work. At the time, he was a certified CPR instructor. The emergency happened before the days when cell phones and social media recorded such events. His lifesaving effort didn’t make the evening news, as it would have today, but he never expected a thank you or praise. He just did what he could to help a family in crisis, and then came home for dinner that night, like always.

Since the focus of the emergency remained with the child; no personal information, like names or phone numbers, were exchanged, and so he never heard from the family again. Though NATURALLY YOURS is a fictional story, the opening scene is my way of acknowledging my husband for his heroism.

2. How long did it take you to write this book? NATURALLY YOURS is a 25,000 word novella. The first draft took a few weeks to write, and then I took another month to rewrite and polish the story before sending it to my publisher.

3. Who is/are your favorite Author(s)? There are so many favorites! Since I have lots of friends in the romance genre, and don’t want to hurt feelings by failing to mention some of them, I’ll list my favorite thriller writers. Currently, they are Lisa Unger, Linwood Barclay, Lisa Garner and Michael Koryta. I’m sure I’ll discover others.

4. What is your all-time favorite book that you have ever read? Memoirs of A Geisha by Arthur Golden is my favorite book of all time. His writing is lyrical and the story is so convincing it’s almost impossible to believe it wasn’t written by a Japanese woman. The book is a masterpiece.

5. Have you ever met any authors before? Sure! I’ve been a member of Romance Writers of America since 2003 and have met many wonderful authors at local chapter meetings, regional conferences, and national conferences. Some have become friends. We support one another and socialize together.

6. What are your hobbies? When I’m not writing, I’m reading, or watching TV or movies. I especially enjoy thrillers, action-adventure movies, and dramas. During football season, I’m glued to the television on Philadelphia Eagles game days. I love watching football. I like a few other teams, but the Eagles are my home team and have my heart.

7. What are you working on now? I just finished a full-length contemporary romance novel and turned it into my publisher. As soon as I sign the contract I can tell you more about the book. I hope you’ll read my upcoming release and also discover my backlist titles.

8. How long have you been writing? I’ve been writing since I was nine years old, and sold my first story to a regional news magazine at nineteen. For many years I worked as a reporter and newspaper columnist before writing fiction.  My first romance novel was published in 2007, and I wrote several books under another pen name before changing direction and writing sweet but sexy mainstream romances as Adele Downs.

9. Do you have photos or descriptions of Mickey Kendall and Amanda Greer?

Amanda Greer has long, shiny dark hair, full lips and a lush body. She glows with good health. She’s not exactly thin, but has a wholesome appearance. Although she doesn’t realize it, she’s beautiful.

Mickey Kendall has light brown hair and gorgeous blue eyes. He’s strong and muscular, but not overly so. He’s of medium height and medium build.

You know how that goes, ‘Love at first sight!’ And poof your whole word changes!

The chemistry these two have is amazing. But with Mickey, he has demons. He is a Veteran from the Iraq war, and he still hasn’t gotten over it. However, in order for Mickey and Amanda to live happily ever after he must first be able to move on from his past. The thing is, can he?

The part that is so upsetting is while Mickey was busy saving the little boy, he was late for a date, (which was not an unusual thing,) and ended up dumped. You see how it is?! Do a good deed for someone, and get knocked down….

This book: “Naturally Yours” just goes to prove to you, that when you think you’re at a stand still, and nothing else matters, you can finally find the answer to all of your prayers. Answers aren’t meant to be searched for, but just found when you aren’t looking. They are just “Naturally yours!”

I give this sweet, romantic book five beautiful stars. It was a wonderful book, and I truly loved every single minute of it. I would recommend this book over and over again. I found it so compelling, and here I was rooting for Mickey and Amanda, and wanting them to work out. When you read something, and find yourself involved in it, so much so that you are rooting for the characters, you know you have found a good book.
