Homeschool Alchemy Guide: 5 Power Healing Herbs and How to Use Them by Lyn Lomasi

Homeschool Alchemy Guide: 5 Power

Healing Herbs and How to Use Them

By: Lyn Lomasi

The reason I wanted to read this book is because I was taught about herbs and their healing powers. I always like to see what other people have learned and educate myself.

In the introduction, it is explained to you that the seed of knowledge is reading and learning and educating yourself. This is something else I happen to agree with. The more you read and learn, the better decisions and life choices you can make. Furthermore, homeschooling is explained to you. Within this book you also learn that homeschooling can also teach you beyond the boundaries of conventional education.

Before I continue, I will define the word alchemy for you. From the Merriam Webster dictionary:

1.    a medieval chemical science and speculative philosophy aiming to achieve the transmutation of the base metals into gold, the discovery of a universal cure for disease, and the discovery of a means of indefinitely prolonging life.

2.    a power or process that changes or transforms something in a mysterious or impressive way.

The book addresses the healing and alchemical uses of five herbs. It begins with lavender. Lavendar can be used to soothe pain and promote healing. It is best when used in an oil format. Lavendar represents transformation and balance.

Children can create pouches and put the lavender into them creating a calming lavender sachet. The children gather the flowers and allow them to dry. Pouches and sachets can be placed under pillows for a calming scent.

To create lavender oil, use olive oil as the carrier. Put dried lavender leaves and flowers into a jar, top with olive oil, and then set it in the sun for two weeks. After two weeks, strain the lavender leaves and flowers and you are left with a lavender oil.

The next herb is sage. You may have heard of sage for burning away negative energy. Sage tea can also help with stomach aches and sore throats.

And the one after that is Tea tree. Which is scientifically known as known as Melaleuca alternifolia. Tea tree oil is known for many healing remedies.

Something you may already be familiar with is chamomile. You can create chamomile tea, or a soothing balm. There are a lot of uses for this herb.

An herb you may find in your kitchen cupboard is called thyme. Not only is it a spice, but it is also a healing herb. It can help with your chest congestion.

Herbs can be made into teas, elixirs, and balms. For that reason, working with herbs is not only educational, but healing as well. You’re not just learning, you’re healing your mind and spirit. Nourishing one's mind, body and spirit. And this is exactly why Lyn Lomasi feels that alchemy needs taught to children, to help mold them into healthier and wiser people.

Teaching children the benefit of herbs, and how they heal, and the wellness that they create is a benefit that will be passed down through the ages.

Through my own experience with herbs and pharmaceuticals I managed to learn that the medicine valium was created through valerian root. And Valerian root is calming and relaxing. My mother used to swear by valium to calm her down and help her relax. I remember her giving me one when I was a teenager, because I was nervous prior to a band performance. Needless to say, I never made it to that performance.

Today I use Valerian root when I am upset, stressed and/or can’t sleep. It helps me to relax and calm down. More-so then melatonin.

Taking, using and creating home remedies is something you should learn and do. While you are doing so, you can learn what is the best treatment for your own ailments. Like pineapple juice for coughing because it has bromelain in it.

A lot of remedies are often referenced as ‘old wives’ tales’ and speculative. But in all honesty, within those old wife’s tales you can find remedies that will and do work. And anything that is natural is better than man made. Not to mention healthier.

This book educates you the reader, as well as the student to whom you should share it with. I give this book five stars. I think it should be in every home. And I also agree that it should be included in the home school curriculum.

AI-generated content may be incorrect.

1. What made you write this and how long did it take you?

Like much of my learning material, I wrote it for my kids and then decided to publish it for others to use as well. As a natural teacher and a homeschool mom since about 25 years ago, it was a topic I knew needed more coverage. Many of the things I teach my kids, beyond basic skills, have little to no coverage. Therefore, I generally end up creating it myself so they can learn it.

 2. What is your favorite section of this book?

I'm not sure I have a favorite section in this book, since so much of it focuses on areas more people need to know about so they can heal and teach their children to as well. Therefore, I would say it's simply the fact that it's designed to teach kids this topic, which I've not found anywhere else.

3. Who designed the cover of this book?

I designed this cover myself, as with all my covers.

 4. What do you suggest to parents wanting to home school with their children?

Don't let outsiders influence what you know in your heart is best for your children, yourself, and your family as a whole. Only a parent knows exactly what each individual child needs. Choose what you do based on your knowledge of your child or children, not on what "they" say or what everyone else is doing.

 5. What made you decide to home school your children?

We've had multiple issues with public schools, such as teachers harming kids, as well as the work being too easy to keep kids engaged. But also, children belong with their parents. We are their first teachers. I don't understand how it became normal to send them away to strangers more hours than we see them in a week. Then, we allow those strangers to do what we should be doing. Children aren't meant to be trapped in a jail-like building all day, learning basic skills over and over, false truths, and things that may not apply to their life and career choices, while failing to learn what will. My oldest child is 28 and my youngest is 5. Together, my partner and I have 8 kids and I've nannied hundreds. So, my experience is extensive and based on more than opinion.

6. What led you to be so creative?

It's just something I am, not anything I chose. You name anything creative and it's most likely a way of life for me.

 7. Do you home school any other children or just your own?

I only home school my own children. Other family members get involved as well. Kids need a supportive family environment to thrive, become well-rounded, learn appropriate social skills, and not have just one parent doing everything.

There have been times when other kids have sat and learned with us during their school breaks or other instances, like when parents are deciding if they want to go to homeschool and they watch what we do. I've nannied in the past and would often teach those kids before or after school or on their breaks and their parents would say they learned more with us in an hour than at school all week. In my opinion, that says more about the schools than me because I teach what I feel all kids should know.

 8. What kind of education have you received yourself?

School of Hard Knocks, University of Life. Joking (with some truth) aside, I attended a mixture of public schools and home school and then for the last part of high school, I finished homeschooling myself and went on to do training in early childhood education.

Beyond that, I have taken many online courses in business and education. However, I did not attend a 4-year college. I don't believe that it is needed for many career choices, only certain ones like becoming a doctor. Most people need real life as a teacher with some hands-on experience in and related to what they will actually do in life. That tends to help more.

I have run my own online business successfully since 2005. With no former schooling, I started a business online at a time before it became popular and to this day, it is more successful than ever, supporting multiple households (some being family, plus a couple people in need that I regularly help because government programs can't or won't).

 9. What is your first work published?

I had my first work published in a school newspaper after acing a state test in 1st grade. It was a story I wrote in class for the literacy section of the test. It also was published in the local newspaper since most children do not score a perfect score on those tests, let alone have that type of quality in a story too, especially in grade 1. The mayor visited our school and gave me an award as well. My mom used to have the clippings and may still, but I'm not sure.
